Hundreds of taxi drivers and members of the taxi union Unifor staged a protest at Parliament Hill today calling for all levels of government to put a stop to the ride sharing service Uber. Several speakers called on Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson to do more to stop the service and for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to become involved. Taxi drivers from Toronto who were in attendance called on Toronto’s Mayor John Tory to step down and will stage a protest in their city on Family Day, February 12th.
The lack of regulations regarding Uber was the main issue for the protesters. Cabbies aren’t happy that Uber drivers don’t have to pay the same taxes or get the same insurance as a traditional taxi. They were also concerned with rider safety and lost jobs. February 02, 2015.
